Congratulations to our Crystal Apple Winners

The Umatilla School District congratulates our two Crystal Apple winners for 2017. These "Excellence in Education" awards are given each year to educators who are going the extra mile in our schools to improve learning for students. Our winners, who were recognized at a reception and ceremony on May 15, are:

Valerie May -- a 3rd Grade Teacher at McNary Heights Elementary School who has worked in the district for 12 years. She is a highly dedicated educator who goes the extra mile to prepare her students. Valerie diligently keeps updated on Common Core information so her students will be successful in 4th grade. A gifted math teacher, her love of the subject evolved into the STEM Academy Math Club now offered after school. Enthusiastic and always a step ahead, “Valerie is one of those talented, treasured teachers we need to recognize for her endless dedication to students and education.”

Tina Ridings -- a Classroom Assistant and STEM Academy Site Coordinator for the district, where she has worked for five years. Tina cares deeply about students and loves seeing the smiles when the magic “I got it” is evident in their eyes. She is a great team player and always finds the best in every single student. She teaches students to be responsible when they work as interns during the after-school STEM Academy and is an active volunteer in the district and community. She is described as “an amazing woman with a heart of gold!”
