MHES Candidates for Leadership Team

MHES held its student leadership elections, and the results are in! Elected to the team is Serena from Mrs. Estrella’s Class, Addison from Ms. Mendoza’s Class, Aaliyah from Mr. Williams Class, and Zahid from Mrs. Keelers Class.

Every year MHES holds elections to choose members of its student leadership team. Elections are open to any fifth-grade student who is interested in running. This year, the selection process involved several stages. The first stage required interested students to complete a form and gather signatures from five friends, their parents, and their teacher. Once all the forms were submitted, the fifth-grade class voted to narrow down the candidates down to two students per class. Once the candidates were narrowed down, the eight students had two weeks to campaign, which included making posters to hang in the hallways of the school and preparing speeches to give to the entire fifth grade class.

Several of the candidates said that the thought of giving a speech was a little overwhelming, but that they were ultimately happy that they did it.

Serena, who was elected to represent Mrs. Estrella’s Class, said, “I felt really nervous giving my speech but I think the elections were really good and I had a really good opponent.”

Addison, who was elected to represent Ms. Mendoza’s class, shared, “I was scared because I was the first one to give my speech, but I think I did a good job.”

The student leadership team will now take on a range of responsibilities throughout the school year. These duties include conducting Friday morning announcements, assisting with MOST Award Assemblies, and participating in Food Waste Audits.

In addition to their regular duties, the student leadership team has exciting plans for the upcoming holiday season. They are organizing a Food Drive to help those in need within the community. They also plan to host a friendly holiday door-decorating competition to bring festive cheer to the classrooms.
