MILTON-FREEWATER — While Burns, Vale and Nyssa earned the lion’s share of the state berths Saturday, May 24, at the 3A Eastern Oregon League Championships at Shockman Field, Umatilla, McLoughlin and Riverside all will send athletes to state.
The 3A State Track and Field Championships are May 29-30 at Hayward Field in Eugene.
Riverside’s Nathen Hammond will compete at state in the 1,500 and 3,000. The junior won the 3,000 with a time of 9:25.66, and was second in the 1,500 with a 4:21.91.
Joining Hammond at state will be Pedro Chavez, who finished second in the 400 with a time of 51.95, and met a qualifying height (5-9.25) in the high jump while placing third.
Osmin Barrera turned in a PR of 16.98 and placed third in the 110 hurdles, but met a state qualifying time. Freshman Seth Hammond placed second in the triple jump with a PR of 42-1 to earn his first trip to Hayward Field.
Umatilla will send its 4x400 relay team to state after Tanner Prindle, Atticus Tesch, Mason Munoz and Jayden Perches turned in a time of 3:32.44 to finish second. Munoz also qualified for state in the long jump with a leap of 20-8.
Perches ran a PR of 41.65 to place third in the 300 hurdles, and his time met state standards for a trip to Eugene.
Vikings’ big man Miguel Gutierrez was second in the discus with a throw of 131-3.25, and hit a PR and state qualifying mark of 46-7.5 in the shot put. He placed third in the event.
Umatilla’s Cristobal Moreno and Benito Soto cleared a PR and state qualifying height in the high jump at 5-9.25 to earn a trip to state.
Burns won the boys team title with 163 points, followed by Vale (145), Nyssa (137.5), Umatilla (74), Riverside (73) and Mac-Hi (57.5).
The Mac-Hi girls will send three athletes to state, with Daisy Koklich going in two events. Koklich ran a PR of 16.63 to tie for first place in the 100 hurdles with Bella Johnson of Vale.
Koklich also placed second in the 300 hurdles with a PR of 50 seconds.
Also headed to state for the Pioneers are Addy Brown, who placed second in the javelin with a PR of 118-1.25, and Yoselin Diaz, who ran a PR of 12:43.09 to place second in the 3,000.
Umatilla sprinter Camila Rodriguez-Campos finished second in the 100 with a PR of 13.13, and won the long jump with a leap of 16-6.
Teammate EvaLynn Campos had a state qualifying jump of 15-11 to earn a trip to state. In the shot put, Rylee Sanchez finished third with a PR of 36-7, which was a state qualifying mark.
Vale won the girls teams title with 217.5 points, with Nyssa second (157), Burns third (98), McLoughlin fourth (86), Umatilla fifth (54) and Riverside sixth (16.5).
