UMATILLA 5, NYSSA 2 — Freshman Elaina Jewett scored two goals to help the Vikings to a Special District 5 home win over the Bulldogs.

“I’m really excited about this team this year,” Umatilla coach Edgar Navarrete said. “We are young, but all the players are stepping up to the plate and are learning to play together.”

Alexa Garcia, Yesenia Castaneda and Evelyn Christensen also scored for the Vikings (2-0-1 EOL), who also got 12 saves from senior goalkeeper Rylee Sanchez.

UMATILLA 1, NYSSA 1 — William Barajas scored in the first half as the Vikings forged a tie with the visiting Bulldogs in Eastern Oregon League action.

“They did quite well, but we are still getting better in some parts of game,” Umatilla coach Pedro Ortiz said. “We need to be able to put on more pressure and have better passes.”

Nyssa (1-1-1 EOL) came back to tie the score in the second half.

Sophomore goalie Abrahan Garcia finished with three saves for the Vikings (1-1-1 EOL).

Volleyball
MCLOUGHLIN 3, UMATILLA 0 — Maritza Ruvalcaba had seven aces, and Miley Rhoads added five kills and three aces as the Pioneers opened Eastern Oregon League play with a 25-14, 25-12, 25-15 home win over the Vikings.

“Umatilla’s coverage was good and we had some easy errors on our side,” Mac-Hi coach Kassidy Ruiz said. “In the second and third games, our crowd fueled our team, helping us get into our groove and we came out with the win.”

Addy Leonetti and Abi Perkins each handed out seven assists for the Pioneers (5-1 overall 1-0 EOL).

With the loss, the Vikings fell to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in league play.

“Tonight was not Umatilla’s night,” Vikings coach Samantha Erz said. “Too many errors and not very strong in our offensive play tonight. Plenty of work to be done before our next game.”

Mac-Hi and Umatilla will play Saturday at the Riverside Tournament.
