UMATILLA 2, RIVERSIDE 2 — The Vikings and Pirates both remain unbeaten in Special District 5 play after playing to a draw in Boardman.

Umatilla (7-0-3 overall, 6-0-3 SD5) took an early lead with a goal by freshman Elaina Jewett.

Riverside (6-0-3, 5-0-3) evened the score in the 25th minute as Leslie Gonzalez played a corner kick. A Umatilla defender tried to clear the ball when it was still in the air, but it rolled off of her leg and into the net for an own goal.

Ten minutes later, Julieta Mendoza played the ball into the 18, drew out the goalie and was able to sneak the ball into the net for a 2-1 lead at the half.

Umatilla freshman Ava Montiel tied the score 25 minutes into the second half.

“After that, it was back and forth defensive stops for both teams,” Riverside coach Eddy Ramos said. “I’m proud of my girls. They are competing well and putting things together at the right time. Umatilla is a solid team and we look forward to the rematch.”

Riverside goalkeeper Tyana Nunez finished with eight saves, while Umatilla keeper Rylee Sanchez had seven saves.

RIVERSIDE 5, UMATILLA 1 — The Pirates improved to 5-1 in the Special District 6 standings with a win over the Vikings in Boardman.

Hugo Ceron scored two goals for Riverside (8-2-1 overall), while Juan Flores, Wilson Rodriguez and Jose Flores each had one.

“It took a long time for us to get things together, but after our first goal we figured it out,” Riverside coach Jose Dueñas said. “Sometimes we gotta have bad games to remember the good ones.”

Riverside goalkeeper Christian Espain played the first half with zero saves, while Hector Magallanes played the second half with zero saves.

Umatilla scored its goal on a penalty kick.
