RIVERSIDE 1, UMATILLA 1 — In another epic battle on the pitch, the Pirates and Vikings played to a draw in Special District 5 play in Umatilla.
The teams played to a 2-2 tie on Oct. 10.
“It was a tough matchup, especially since we just played them a couple of days ago,” Umatilla coach Edgar Navarrete said. “Our players left everything they had on that field and fought until the very end.”
The Vikings (8-0-4 overall) are 7-0-4 in league play, while the Pirates (7-0-4) are 6-0-4.
The Vikings led 1-0 at the half on a goal by freshman Ava Montiel, but the Pirates tied the score 20 minutes into the second half as Leslie Gonzalez fed the ball to Rocio Garay, who worked her way around multiple defenders and put the ball past the goalie.
“We held most of the possession, but just couldn’t finish shots or were a little too late making our runs,” Riverside coach Eddy Ramos said. “Second half, the girls kept the momentum and controlled the ball and the field.”
The Pirates kept Umatilla keeper Rylee Sanchez busy as she had 18 saves on the day.
“My girls played great, Ramos said. “Played with confidence and created plays for each other. Umatilla played a great game. Both teams gave it their all and it made for a fun, stressful and exciting game.”
