CRESWELL 3, UMATILLA 1 — The Vikings, in the midst of their best season since 2019, suffered their first loss of the season as the host Bulldogs beat Umatilla in the 3A/2A/1A state quarterfinals.

“It was a rough game, but it was also a great opportunity for our team,” Umatilla coach Edgar Navarrete said. “They’ve never been to something like this, so to break that mold and understand what the stakes can feel like at this level is something new.”

Third-ranked Creswell (15-1-2) will play Amity on Nov. 11, in the semifinals. No. 6 Umatilla finished its season with a 12-1-4 record.

“We’ve set some records this season, and this year’s team is one we will be looking to beat for years to come. At the same time, this loss does hurt and I know our girls are taking it hard. They gave everything they had today and there was nothing more we could have asked of them.”

Freshman Evelyn Christensen scored the Vikings’ lone goal, while senior goalkeeper Rylee Sanchez finished with eight saves.
