Girls Wrestling
Pendleton’s Gabby Kennedy and Madison Chase each won a title, and the Bucks placed third at the Oregon Trail Championship at Echo High School.
Kennedy pinned all three of her opponents in the 235-pound division, including Hermiston’s Delaney Cano in 35 seconds in the title bout.
Chase had a bye in the first round of the 170-pound bracket, then pinned her next three opponents, including Emily Delarosa of Mac-Hi in the finals in 3:55.
The Bucks got a second-place finish by Harlee James at 190. James had a major decision and a fall to reach the finals, where she was pinned by La Grande’s Maddy Armstrong in 1:10.
At 135, Hazel Case placed second. She was 2-1 in the four-person bracket, with a loss to La Grande’s Emmeline Livingstone.
Thiri Dahl added a third-place finish for the Bucks, pinning Sara Akers of Irrigon in 1:35 in her final match.
Peyton James also was third for the Bucks, earning a 9-0 major decision over Union/Cove’s Hailey Wright in the placing match.
Riverside had two champions in Liana Lissman (100) and Megan Wiseman (130).
After pinning her first two opponents, Lissman met teammate Clarissa Hernandez in the finals, where she pinned Hernandez in 1:28.
Wiseman spent less than 2 minutes on the mat Wednesday, pinning her first two opponents in 42 and 23 seconds. In the finals, she pinned Hermiston’s Reyna Rodriguez in 23 seconds.
Also placing for the Pirates were Bella Martinez (3rd, 100), Adalia Chavez (3rd, 115), Kamila Rangel (4th, 100), and Yamileth Hernandez (4th, 170).
Union/Cove had just five girls entered in the tournament, but came away with two champions — Kari Stockhoff at 120, and Jenna Johnson at 155.
Stockhoff won both of her matches by fall, including a pin of Hermiston’s Keely Burns in 1:08.
Johnson posted a major decision and a fall to reach the finals, where she pinned Umatilla’s Rylee Sanchez in 5:04.
Irrigon’s Roxy Solis placed second at 125. She won her first two matches by fall, then was pinned by La Grande’s Avery Robinson in 1:18 in the title bout.
Also for the Knights, Cinthia Madrigal was third at 235, Carter Sullivan was fourth at 125, Emma Macomber was fourth at 135.
For Umatilla, Tatum Trujillo was fourth at 110, Harleigh Marshall was fourth at 140 for Imbler, and Jacee Greene was third for Echo/ Stanfield at 110.
La Grande won the team title with 214.5 points, with Hermiston second (185). Pendleton was third (107), followed by Riverside (83), Union/Cove (63) and Irrigon (58).
Umatilla finished eighth (30.5), with Mac-Hi ninth (20), Echo/Stanfield 10th (17), Weston-McEwen 11th (7) and Imbler 13th (4).
Boys Wrestling
ECHO — Riverside crowned one champion, had five wrestlers place second, and finished second in the team standings at the Oregon Trail Championship on Wednesday, Dec. 10, at Echo High School.
The Hermiston JV won the team title with 198 points, followed by Riverside (167.5), La Grande (150.5), Irrigon (148) and McLoughlin (143).
Union Cove was sixth (115), Pendleton seventh (103.5), Echo eighth (46), Umatilla ninth (40.5), Imbler 11th (13.5), Stanfield 12th (10) and Weston-McEwen 13th (7).
The Pirates’ big man, Fernando Medina, won the 285-pound title, pinning teammate Emmanuel Morelia in 1:29.
Angel Madrigal was second at 106. He received a bye to the semifinals, where he pinned Pendleton’s Ben Dahlen in 1:13. In the finals, Hermiston’s Alexander Gonzalez won as Madrigal was disqualified.
At 132, Leonel Vargas placed second, getting pinned by Irrigon’s Lee Issel in 3:37. Vargas had registered two pins and a decision to reach the championship match.
Also placing second were Pablo Cisneros in the 138B bracket, and Billy Gomez in the 132B weight class.
Riverside also saw Nikolai Rockwell place third at 126, Andrew Calderon third at 150, Alexis Amaya third at 175, Bryon Brindis fourth at 113, and Julian Ortega fourth at 132.
Mac-Hi saw Dallen Duncan (150), Masyn Lindsey (175), and Nolan Noirot (215) take top honors in their respective weight classes.
Duncan pinned all three of his opponents on the day, including Union/Cove’s Larry McKaig in 2:42 in the title bout.
Lindsey won his quarterfinal and semifinal matches by fall, then pinned Hermiston’s Jose Mendez Rivera in 16 seconds in the championship match.
Noirot also pinned all three of his opponents, taking down Irrigon’s Emilio Romero in 2:38 of the championship match.
At 140 pounds, the Pioneers got a second-place finish from Tyler Hoel, who pinned his first three opponents to reach the finals. In the championship match, La Grande’s Brennan Pinther pinned Hoel in 5:59.
Also placing second for the Pioneers was Braydn Beck at 113. Beck had a fall and a major decision to reach the finals, where he was pinned by La Grande’s Jerrick Leonard in 5:17.
Placing third for Mac-Hi was Williams Nunes at 106. Nunes lost in the quarterfinals, then won three consolation matches to reach the placing match, where he posted an 8-2 decision over Echo’s Zayden Zwald.
Irrigon had three men win titles, starting with Anthony Vasquez at 120 pounds. Vasquez had two falls and a technical fall to reach the finals, where he pinned Mason Schneider of Umatilla in 2:46.
Issel won at 132, and Preston Slawson won at 138, pinning all four of his opponents. In the finals, Slawson pinned Hermiston’s Francisco Carrillo in 3:50.
Union/Cove crowned one champion in Sam Platz at 190. Platz pinned all three of his opponents, including Kolt McQuinn of Pendleton in the finals in 1:13.
Gabe McKaig placed second for the Bobcats at 157. He had a pin and a decision to reach the finals, where he was pinned by La Grande’s Bryler Anderson in 2:56.
Caden Blackburn was third at 138. After losing in the quarterfinals, Blackburn won three consolation matches to reach the third-place match, where he pinned Hermiston’s Aiden Gerrard in 4:41.
In addition to McQuinn’s second-place finish, Pendleton saw Sam Simmons (285) and Vance Phillips (144) place third.
Phillips had two pins to reach the semis, where he lost an 18-4 major decision. In the placing match, he pinned La Grande’s Abel Nelson in 47 seconds.
Simmons, who lost in the semifinals, battled back to reach the third- place match, where he pinned Irrigon’s Harley Olney in 34 seconds.
Echo’s Marley Blanchett placed third at 190, pinning Irrigon’s Dylan Harper-Kestler in 2:44. Teammate Creedence Bruce was fourth at 215, getting pinned by Pine Eagle’s Landon Harlan in 2:46 of the third-place match.
Umatilla did not have any championships, but Kyle Carlton was second at 165, Jessee Savage was third at 120, and Connor Pooley was third at 165.
Carlton registered a major decision and a technical fall to reach the finals, where he was pinned by La Grande’s Cade McKinley in 1:13.
Savage, who lost in the semifinals, won his consolation match to reach the third-place match, where he earned a 21-8 major decision over Hermiston’s Emiliano Rodriguez-Mendoza.
Pooley, who lost in the quarterfinals, came back through the consolation bracket, where he pinned Esteban Mendoza of Hermiston in 1:17 in the third-place match.
