UMATILLA 62, IRRIGON 31 — Peytan Fullerton had game-high 19 points, and the Vikings put an end to the Knights’ three game win streak with a home win.

“We definitely did not play to our potential,” Irrigon coach Fernando Sanchez said. “We are better than what the story of the scores tells.”

Umatilla (4-3) bolted out to a 20-10 lead after the first quarter, then extended its lead to 36-19 at the half and the rout was on.

The Vikings used a 26-12 run in the second half to leave no doubt.

Yelena Garibay and Alivia Gridley each had 10 points for the Knights (5-2).

UMATILLA 64, IRRIGON 53 — David Garcia scored eight of his 16 points in the fourth quarter to help the Vikings to a home win over the pesky Knights.

“It was a great game for the most part,” Irrigon coach Fredy Vera said. “I thought we didn’t play all that great, but we had an opportunity to win this game. They also had 27 free throws to our seven. I think that’s where the ball game was won. I really like that our boys are showing improvement every game.”

Umatilla (5-2) led by the slimmest of margins during the game, including 27-26 at the half and 46-43 after three quarters.

An 18-10 run by the Vikings in the fourth quarter helped seal the win.

Mike McGee led Umatilla with 18 points, eight rebounds and three steals, while Cris Moreno added eight points and Linkin Zamudio six pints and seven rebounds.

Hayden Vera had 19 points to lead the Knights (4-3), who also got 10 points from Curtis Krogh.

Boys Wrestling
ELGIN MEMORIAL CLASSIC — Landon McMahon won the 285- pound title, and Owen Guerra was second at 190, to lead Heppner to third place Friday at Elgin High School.

McMahon pinned all three of his opponents to reach the finals, where he pinned Kaiden Peck of Weiser (ID) in 2 minutes to improve to 15-0 on the year.

Guerra had a bye and recorded two pins to reach the finals. In the championship match, Guerra was pinned by Sam Platz of Union/Cove in 3:24.

Also for the Mustangs, Jaxson Wright was third at 113, Matt Wilson was fourth at 144, Kooper Miller was fourth at 215, Connor Wilson was fifth at 165, Kaden King was fifth at 175, and Zion Ramos-Lopez was sixth at 120.

In addition to Platz’s title, Caden Blackburn was second at 138 pounds. In the finals, Grant Union’s Taylor Parsons won by technical fall over Blackburn, 17-1.

Elgin had one champion in Landyn Fincher at 126 pounds. In the championship match, Fincher won by technical fall over La Grande’s Deegan Nelson, 21-5.

Lucas Fincher was second for the Huskies at 106. In the finals, he lost by technical fall (17-2) to Jose Jimenez of Nyssa.

Also for Elgin, Christopher Largent was third at 138, and Logan Arnold was third at 175.

Imbler saw Anthony Pallis place fourth at 165, while Bryce Eckhart was fifth at 215, and Wyatt Tyrell was sixth at 138.

Umatilla’s Jessee Savage was fourth at 113, and Weston-McEwen’s Wesley Thomas was fifth at 132.

Nyssa won the team title with 264.5 points, with Weiser (183.5) second and Heppner third with 126.5 points. Elgin was eighth (84.5), Union/Cove ninth (49.5), Umatilla 12th (16) and Weston-McEwen 13th (11).

Girls Wrestling
ELGIN MEMORIAL CLASSIC — Heppner crowned two champions and finished second in the team standings behind Nyssa at Elgin High School.

Harlee Cotton won the 130-pound title for the Mustangs, pinning all three of her opponents. In the finals, she pinned Malia Mayhew of Enterprise in 25 seconds.

Sarah Estes placed first at 145 pounds, winning both of her matches by fall. In the finals, she pinned Brooklyn Sanchez of Umatilla in 37 seconds.

Also for the Mustangs, Journey Cavan-Harris was third at 140, and Emillia Cavan-Harris was third at 155.

Umatilla’s Shanie Thomas won the 155-pound title, winning all three of her round-robin matches by fall.

Union, which was third in the team standings, saw Payton Bowers win the 115-pound title, winning all three matches by fall.

Also for the Bobcats, Kari Stockhoff was second at 120, Aurora Shearer was third at 110, and Amelia Doyon was fourth at 115.

Weston-McEwen’s Georgianne Morris won the 170-pound title, while Laila Jones won the 235-pound title.

Also for the TigerScots, Bella Karas was third at 145, Brooke Boothman was fourth at 140, and Ehlani Barahona was fourth at 110.

Elgin’s lone competitor, Bailey Hasbell, won the 140-pound title, winning two matches by fall and one by major decision.

Imbler’s Payton Bittner was third at 180.

Nyssa won the team title with 126.5 points, while Heppner (47) was second and Union/Cove (44) third. Umatilla (24) tied for fourth with Grant Union, while Weston-McEwen (23) was sixth, and Elgin (19) was ninth.
