ECHO — Evelyn Christensen scored the game’s only goal as Umatilla opened Special District 5 play with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Echo on Saturday afternoon.

“It was a tough first game,” Umatilla coach Edgar Navarrete said. “Our girls had majority possession, but Echo’s keeper kept us at bay throughout the entire game. With some changes in the second half, our girls were able to pull off that one goal despite the wind keeping us at a disadvantage.”

The Cougars fell to 1-1 in league play after beating Riverside on Thursday.

“The girls fought well,” Echo coach Lucas Schuch said. “Jude Royer made 13 saves to keep us in the game.”
