RIVERSIDE 5, UMATILLA 0 — Cristian Espain and Hector Magallanes each had two saves to help the Pirates shut out the Vikings in a Greater Oregon League hybrid match in Boardman.
Espain played the first half as Riverside (2-1-1 overall, 1-0 GOL) took a 4-0 lead behind goals from Billy Gomez, Pablo Cisneros, Juan Flores and Johnny Hernandez.
In the second half, Magallanes kept the net clear, while Johnny Lomeli scored the final goal.
“The team played well with precision in the first half,” Riverside coach Jose Duenas said. “In in the second half, we just held onto the ball a bit more than usual. Today’s focus was to maintain possession and transition into pockets if allowed.”

RIVERSIDE 2, UMATILLA 1 — The Pirates picked up their first Special District 5 victory with a home win over the Vikings.
“It was a great game,” Riverside coach Eddy Ramos said. “A lot of good play by both teams. We started the game well and had some good ball movement. A lot of back and forth.”
Umatilla scored first on a goal by Shay McCallister 25 minutes into the game.
“My defense had a breakdown inside the middle of the 18 and couldn’t clear the ball,” Eddy said. “Umatilla took advantage and scored a goal from the penalty area.”
Suzi McCord evened the score 30 minutes into the second half for Riverside.
“In the second half, my girls came out more aggressive and played much better. We opened up the defense and hit the weak spots. We were able to play the ball into Suzi in the middle of the field, she dribbled up and from about 25 yards, took a shot and scored. Perfect placement, right under the crossbar and the goalie was barely able to get her fingertips on it.”
Leslie Gonzalez scored with 4 minutes left in the game to give the Pirates (1-1 SD5) the lead.
“Suzi sent a beautiful cross and Leslie timed her run down the weak side to put it in the net,” Eddy said. “Proud of the girls for bouncing back after the disappointing loss to Echo last week.”
Vikings’ goalkeeper EvaLynn Campos had nine saves, while Riverside keeper Tyana Payan had eight saves.
“It was a tough game and Riverside put up a great fight and constantly kept us on our toes,” Umatilla coach Edgar Navarrete said. “There are some areas we need to work on for the next time we play them, but it’s a game we are looking forward to playing again.”
