PENDLETON — Pendleton picked up its first win of the season with a 2-1 victory Tuesday over neighboring Umatilla.

“I am extremely proud of our boys and their dedication to improving every single day,” Pendleton coach Kade Clark said. “We came into this game with one goal, and that was to walk away with the win. We achieved just that.”

After a scoreless first half, the Bucks (1-2) got on the board 20 minutes into the second half as Antony Tarapues scored off an assist by Liam Clark.

Five minutes later, Umatilla’s Jaden Armenta tied the score. Miles Johnson sent a rocket of a shot past Vikings’ goalkeeper Miguel Mendez to seal the win for the Bucks.

It was a major team win,” Clark said. “Each and every one of our boys played a key role in this game and I can’t wait to see what this team is able to accomplish this season. Excited to start league play next week against Ontario.”

Pendleton goalkeeper Thor Case finished with five saves. Mendez had one save.

RIVERSIDE 3, UMATILLA 1 — The Pirates opened Eastern Oregon League play with a 25-23, 21-25, 25-16, 25-22 home win over the Vikings.

It was the first win of the season for Riverside (1-4 overall, 1-0 EOL).

“Umatilla played a hard-fought game and had great communication throughout every set,” Riverside coach Rachel Lafferty said. “Our girls capitalized on seeing the court during rallies, and found the open spots.”

For the Vikings (0-6, 0-1), Rylee Griggs had five aces, and Naeyeli Rodarte had four kills.

“The girls played a hard-fought game, taking it to four sets,” Umatilla coach Ashley McAdams said. “Both teams came out and gave it all they had, it just came down to the little things. We just have to keep pushing hard and we’ll get to where we want to be. I’m proud of the girls and the work they have put in.”
