UMATILLA 1, NYSSA 0 — Javier Ruiz scored on a penalty kick in the first half for the Vikings as they escaped with a Greater Oregon League hybrid road win over the Bulldogs.

“We controlled the game most of the time, but we failed to score a second goal even though we had many opportunities,” Umatilla coach Pedro Ortiz said.

Miguel Mendez had the shutout for Umatilla (2-3 overall, 1-2 GOL).

Girls Soccer

UMATILLA 2, NYSSA 0 — The Vikings knocked off the undefeated Bulldogs on the road in Special District 5 action.

“It was a tough start with some very close calls at the beginning, but our team was able to become composed and edge out a win,” Umatilla coach Edgar Navarrete said. “Our keeper also helped keep our lead with some tremendous saves.”

Sophomores Evelyn Christensen and Elaina Jewett scored for Umatilla (4-1 overall, 3-1 SD5). Nyssa (4-1 overall, SD5), which was averaging 4.5 goals a game, could not get a ball past Umatilla keeper EvaLynn Campos, who finished with 10 saves.

Volleyball

UMATILLA 3, MCLOUGHLIN 1— The Viking improved to 1-1 in Eastern Oregon League play with a 20-25, 25-19, 25-9, 25-14 home win over the Pioneers.

“It was a tough loss for us,” Mac-Hi coach Kassidy Ruiz said. “The girls worked hard and fought, but we just couldn’t come up with the win tonight. We started strong, winning the first set, but struggled to maintain that momentum through the rest of the match.”

Ahri Villagomez led the Pioneers (0-5 overall, 0-1 EOL) with eight assists, six digs and three kills, while Maddie Stiefel had five kills and two digs, Brynlee Miller four digs, two kills and one ace, and Ranata Molina nine digs and two assists.
