UMATILLA 28, RIVERSIDE 0 — Linkin Zamudio ran for 175 yards, and Xzavier Rodriguez threw for 97 yards and two touchdowns as the Vikings opened their season with a road win over the Pirates.
“It’s nice to finally go against someone else,” Umatilla coach John Williams said. “There’s a lot of things to clean up. We had some mental mistakes. Everything is fixable. I’m happy with their effort.”
Rodriguez threw back-to-back touchdowns in the second quarter to Bryce Morris of 11 and 56 yards as Umatilla took a 14-0 lead at the half.
Edwin Madrigal had a 1-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, and KJ Carlton took off down the field for a 73-yard touchdown run to finish the scoring.
Riverside (0-2) had a tough time holding onto the ball offensively, losing four fumbles and throwing an interception. The Pirates finished with 137 yards of offense, led by #23 with 31 yards rushing.
Defensively for the Vikings, Miguel Gutierrez had eight tackles and two fumble recoveries, while Morris, Judah Tesch and David Arroyo all had seven tackles. Morris also had an interception and forced a fumble.
