CBMS Places 2nd in Investment Competition

Earlier in the school year, Clara Brownell Middle School (CBMS) students participated in the investment competition, The Stock Market Game, and placed second overall in the Oregon fall middle school division. This spring, they were recognized for this achievement at the Annual Banquet and Awards Celebration on May 13, presented by the Oregon Council on Economic Education at the OSU Portland Center.

The Stock Market Game, a program by the SIFMA Foundation, is an online simulation that "engages students grades 4-12 in the world of economics, investing, and personal finance," according to the organization's website (www.stockmarketgame.org). In this two-month project, students managed a portfolio, researched companies, and chose companies to invest in.

CBMS students who competed in the Stock Market Game were from Mr. Ian Coyle's finance classes. At the banquet, these students and others from around Oregon were recognized and presented with medals and were given fun merchandise. Along with medals, the students were also awarded a $50 credit to start an Oregon College Savings account!

Remy and Allan, a pair of 8th-grade students who attended the banquet, said they enjoyed the opportunity to speak with the keynote speaker, Oregon State Treasurer Tobias Read and ask him financial questions. They also enjoyed being honored at the banquet and described it as a “cool experience.”

Way to go, Vikings, on this great accomplishment!
