To celebrate the end of middle school, 8th grade students at Clara Brownell Middle School (CBMS) wrapped up May with some friendly competition. The month-long challenge designed to build teamwork and end the year on a high note, featured three water balloon events held each Friday in May.
Students competed together, launching water balloons using large sling-shot-style launchers. With one student on each side and another in the middle to pull back and release, the balloons soared across the athletics field to earn points in a variety of challenges.
In the first week students decorated posters to represent their teams, which were then placed on the football field as targets. Each hit earned the team a point.
The second week raised the stakes with specific field targets, each worth a different number of points. From the football goal posts to the discus ring and bleachers, students had to choose carefully how to use their limited balloons for the maximum score.
The final week was the grand finale. Advisory classes were stationed at different corners of the football field with their launchers ready. Each advisory class had three teams of launchers. If a launcher team was hit, they were “disabled” for two minutes. If a class lost all their launcher teams at once, they were eliminated. Each launcher team hit counted as one point.
The water balloon competitions were a favorite among students and were designed to be the start of a fun end-of- year tradition. The goal was to create a memorable sendoff for the 8th graders before they move on to high school. Based on the laughter, splashes, and school spirit, it was a success!
