On Friday, April 18th, the Umatilla High School Varsity Baseball Team experienced a memorable day filled with learning, baseball, and new opportunities. The team traveled to Columbia Basin College (CBC) for a campus visit, where they toured the college and learned more about the educational programs available. As a special part of their visit, the athletes also toured the baseball facilities, met with the head baseball coach, and had the chance to observe a live team practice. During the visit, they gained insight into the college baseball recruitment process and the level of commitment it takes to compete at the next level.
I really love baseball, so I want to continue playing and get a college degree,” shared junior Carter Griggs, who plays pitcher and third base. Reflecting on the CBC visit he added, “It motivated me as an athlete mostly just to be able to see where your baseball career can go and what you can work towards.”
Following their time at CBC, the players were treated to a Tri-Cities Dust Devils minor league baseball game by their coaches. Thanks to Coach Coyle’s arrangements, the team received early access to the stadium, giving them the opportunity to watch on-field warm ups and batting practice before the gates opened to the public. This behind-the-scenes experience allowed the players to see firsthand how professional athletes prepare for a game and provided the chance to meet and talk with several Dust Devils players.
Later that evening, Umatilla seniors Davis Raymond and RJ Estrada were honored with the opportunity to throw out the ceremonial first pitches.
“I didn’t realize that was going to happen. I got to throw a pitch in front of a couple hundred people, it was pretty cool,” said Raymond, who plays short, pitcher, first base and third base.
The entire Umatilla team joined them on the field to celebrate the moment. It was a day to remember for Umatilla Baseball!
