UMATILLA — Umatilla kept its place at the top of the Special District 5 standings with a 6-1 victory on Saturday, Sept. 27, over Irrigon.

“It was a really great game,” Umatilla coach Edgar Navarrete said. “It was great to see how much the team has improved since the beginning of the season until now. We’re really starting to come together as a team going into the second half of the season.”

Umatilla and Echo/Stanfield share the top spot in the SD5 standings at 5-0-2.

This season is the first time the Vikings have won five or more games since they finished the 2019 season 6-5-3 overall and 5-1-2 in league play.

Freshman Elaina Jewett scored two goals for the Vikings, while Alexa Garcia, Evelyn Christensen, Ava Montiel and Samantha Lona all had one goal.

Alivia Gridley scored for the Knights (3-3-1), while goalkeeper Yelena Garibay had 18 saves.
