The Umatilla School District is excited to recognize this year’s Crystal Apple “Excellence in Education” and Legacy award recipients. These outstanding individuals were honored at the Crystal Apple Awards Ceremony organized by the Intermountain Education Service District (IMESD) on Tuesday, May 13, at the Pendleton Convention Center.
The Crystal Apple Awards celebrate staff members who go above and beyond to support students and help create a positive school environment. This year, we proudly honor Tammy Wagner, Karen Sheller, Taunya Daniel, and Lisa Dahlin for their dedication and impact across our schools.
Tammy Wagner is a Daycare Teacher at Umatilla High School. She has worked for 19 years in the district, where she has served in multiple roles. She is a UHS graduate, and served as an educational assistant and volleyball coach before becoming a teacher. Tammy established the Wild Explorers Daycare program and grew the program from its initial seed of an idea to the incredible model it is today. Tammy’s ability to manage classroom learning experiences for students while also overseeing staff and supporting daycare children is greatly appreciated.
Karen Sheller is a 2nd Grade Teacher at McNary Heights Elementary. She has worked for the Umatilla School District for 23 years. An esteemed alumna of the district, Karen is an exceptional teacher, always demonstrating dedication and leadership. Her contributions include organizing the annual Earth Day Celebration, which creates core memories for McNary Heights students and provides a great opportunity for school and community collaboration. Karen is a strong leader on the Core Team, Umatilla Education Association and at her school. Colleague Melanie Johnston stated, “Karen has demonstrated her dedication to students by teaching them the ‘love of learning.’ She provides them with an environment full of fun and focus, with students remembering their time with her for years to come.”
Taunya Daniel is the Special Education Director for Umatilla School District, where she has worked for 18 years. Taunya is a highly regarded educational leader whose dedication to enhancing teaching practices and student outcomes for every student is evident in all she does. As an alumna, classroom teacher, and administrator, she has shown her dedication to Umatilla through her focus on quality learning for students. In her current role in Special Education, she invests significant time in professional development, data analysis and staff involvement to foster strong systems of support for students experiencing disabilities. Taunya’s strong planning and practical approach have improved services for students.
Lisa Dahlin is an Educational Assistant at Umatilla High School. She has worked in the district for 19 years. Her dedication and commitment to student success is evident through her involvement both inside and outside the classroom. She started her career in Umatilla as a Title IA assistant and helped start the district’s first after-school program at Clara Brownell Middle school over 20 years ago. She now serves as an educational assistant at Umatilla High where she shares her culinary and hospitality expertise with students. In addition to her school day responsibilities, Lisa also supports the FCCLA students in their many endeavors beyond the school day.
Hosted annually by the IMESD, the Crystal Apple Awards recognize exceptional educators and school staff from their 17 component school districts across Morrow, Umatilla, and Union Counties. Nominees can be any district employee and may be nominated by administrators, coworkers, parents, students, or community members.
The Legacy Awards honor employees who have served for many years within a single school district. The Legacy Awards recognize the lasting contributions of individuals who have helped shape district operations and supported student success over time. The school district is pleased to recognize Dee Lorence for her commitment and dedication to Umatilla students and staff.
Dee Lorence is a Counselor at Umatilla High School. She has worked in the Umatilla School District for 18 years. Dee has created a trusting and nurturing environment where students feel comfortable seeking help and guidance. Her ability to connect families with essential community resources ensures that students receive comprehensive support beyond the school walls. Dee meticulously oversees the academic progress of students, successfully helping them navigate their academic journeys and transition from high school into postsecondary endeavors. She is a trusted confidante, knowledgeable resource and dedicated advocate for faculty. Dee’s unwavering dedication, professionalism, and ability to connect with students and staff make her an exceptional educator and a truly deserving recipient of the Crystal Apple Award. Her impact on Umatilla High School will be felt for years to come.
“It is exciting to honor these stellar individuals. They do much for the school district and it’s wonderful to recognize them for their dedication,” said Superintendent Heidi Sipe. Sipe also expressed appreciation to the Intermountain ESD for hosting this event for the region each year and stated, “This event is always a special night because we get to see people who make a positive difference around the region honored and celebrated by their colleagues, friends and families. It’s a great way to end the school year.”
