Last week in PE, students at Columbia Vista Intermediate School had the chance to try out the brand-new rock climbing wall in the school’s gym. Mrs. Hernandez introduced an exploratory lesson where students were able to put their climbing skills to the test.

Students first learned about the safety procedures and then practiced proper techniques for rock climbing. After climbing up to the safety line a few times, they were able to try “traverse climbing,” moving sideways across the holds instead of going straight up.

Mrs. Hernandez also added fun challenges for the students to try. One challenge was climbing using only certain colors of hand and foot holds, with each color offering a different level of difficulty. Another challenge involved following the red line of holds that runs across the wall while only using the tips of their toes.

Fourth grader Dylan shared that she was nervous at first to climb the wall. “I’m scared of heights, but after going through the safety limits I was excited to try the rock wall and I ended up having fun,” she said.

Another fourth grade student, Victor, said it was more difficult than expected, but with practice it became a little easier.

Students enjoyed the new experience and are looking forward to more climbing activities in future PE classes.
