UHS Robotics students serving meal to resident at Links Senior Apartments

Students in Umatilla High School’s FRC robotics program are making an impact by serving weekly meals to seniors in the community.

Each Friday, team members travel to the Links Senior Apartments in McNary OR, where they help serve lunch for residents. The effort began after the team recognized a need–there were no regular meal services available for local seniors–so they decided to take action.

Team members rotate each week to participate, as only a limited number of students can travel in the school district’s vehicle with their chaperone. Once on site, students set up lunch in the apartment complex's event center and serve meals to seniors who attend. They also deliver meals to residents' doors for those who are unable to join, whether due to illness or a busy schedule. Their next meal service will take place on Friday, April 3rd, following spring break.

For many students the experience has been both meaningful and enjoyable.

“It’s fun to help people and I enjoy being around the seniors,” said freshman Courtney Boddeker. “It doesn’t take a lot out of your day to help someone.”

Another student, sophomore Axyl Jimenez, shared a similar perspective. “It’s great to know we are a team who’s willing to come together to help people.”

In addition to weekly meals, the team recently hosted a pie contest for seniors in celebration of Pi Day. The seniors baked a variety of pies for judges to sample, and the judges then announced their top entries. Judie Gonzales was named grand champion, earning first place with her Key Lime Pie and second place with her Peanut Butter Pie. Tawney Miller placed third with her Chocolate Pie, and Pam Stewart was selected as the Family Favorite for her Strawberry Pie.

The contest was judged by Mayor Caden Sipe, Superintendent Heidi Sipe, and Fire Board Chairman Kyle Sipe.

Through their ongoing efforts, Umatilla High School robotics students are showing that teamwork extends beyond robotics–it’s also about recognizing needs and supporting others in the community.
