The Umatilla School District recently honored exceptional staff members with Bridge Builder Awards during the Umatilla Distinguished Citizens Award Banquet held May 15 at Umatilla High School.
The annual banquet celebrates individuals and organizations who make a positive impact throughout the Umatilla Community. In addition to the district’s Bridge Builder Awards, the event also recognizes a Citizen of the Year, Business of the Year, and award recipients from the Umatilla Police and Fire Departments.
The district’s Bridge Builder Award recognizes staff members whose dedication and service strengthen connections between the Umatilla School District and the broader community. This year’s recipients included Anay Mendoza and Courtney Bivins.

Umatilla alum Anay Mendoza, a 5th-grade Dual Language teacher at Columbia Vista Intermediate, was recognized for her ability to build meaningful connections with students while maintaining a structured and supportive classroom environment. In addition to her work in the classroom, Mendoza is known for volunteering through the district and supporting the great Umatilla community through her service and leadership.

Courtney Bivins, an Educational Assistant and STEAM Academy Afterschool Site Coordinator at Columbia Vista Intermediate, was honored for her flexibility, leadership, and dedication to supporting students and staff. Whether stepping into different roles throughout the school, organizing events, or supporting the STEAM Academy program, Bivins is known for her willingness to help wherever needed and for the care she brings to the school community.
"We appreciate the Chamber of Commerce including the School District in the Distinguished Citizen’s banquet each year. It’s a wonderful way to honor staff and the dedicated members of our community. It’s an event we look forward to each year," said Superintendent Heidi Sipe.
